Why I (Now) Charge For My Initial Doula Consultation
In my first three years of practice, I offered complimentary guidance discussions. In my profession, the alternative to a free initial consult is a bold move, one that challenges industry norms and expectations. But as my visibility grew—especially through online search engines—and my online bookings increased, I began to experience another increase—one that encouraged me to transform my personal approach to this important first step in private communication with a potential client. Today, I charge a small fee for my initial doula consultation, here’s why:
1. Reducing No-Shows
When someone books a call with me, I arrange my schedule and prepare to be fully present for that conversation. That means carving out time from my work and homeschooling my children, and arranging childcare if necessary. Despite my personal commitment to this time, I’ve had many bookings to my calendar of folks who do not show up to the call, nor communicate a need to cancel or reschedule—even with email reminders beforehand, personal text messages during the call, and an email check-in afterward. Charging a fee helps ensure that those who book a consultation with me are committed to showing up, just as I am.
2. A Sign of Commitment
I firmly believe that when you value something, you invest in it. We can invest in many ways, of course - certainly with time, and certainly with finances. Booking a discussion with a fee communicates to me that you’re serious about exploring my doula support, and value the time we’re about to share. And in turn, it allows me to show up well for you, knowing that we’re both committed to the conversation.
3. Value Is Built Into Every Mother of Ease Conversation
Even if we decide not to work together, you will leave our call more informed and better prepared for your journey. Whether with a recommendation, a piece of insight, or a fresh perspective, I ensure that our time together is a valuable gathering. This alone is worthy.
4. Your Fee Rolls Into Your Retainer
If we decide to move forward together, your consultation fee isn’t an extra cost—it flows into your retainer fee. This means your investment in our initial conversation is the starting point for contribution to your doula support.
5. It Holds My Space For The Right Clients
By setting this standard for my consultations, I am able to connect with families who are ready for the level of care, expertise, and support I provide. This allows me to focus my consultative energy on folks who respect the idea of a mutual commitment from the start, and appreciate a set-aside opportunity to connect with one another. If you’re ready to take this step with me, I’d love to meet you soon!
